In Catania, in Sicily, takes place his first artistic training and he obtains the first awards. Very young he moved to Milan - are the first 60s –in that period particularly rich with culture and where the artistic debate, dominated by the presence of Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Agostino Bonalumi, Dadamaino, Giovanni Colombo, Turi Simeti, was very inspiring. Through the experimental pictorial act, Pinelli switch to a conscious reflection on how to intervene to change the initial data and to approach the essence of painting. During this phase of his research, in which he attempts to create a link between tradition and innovation, his focus is on the surface, to the "vibrato", to the "state anxiety" of painting, looking for a depth to cross. Belong to this period the series of Topologie (Topologies) and the series of Monocromi (Monochromes), whose surface is initially delimited by a thin line explicit or intuitive, and it is moved by a anxiety, by a movement that seems a perceptual breath of painting. These experiences, in which the artist expresses himself with large canvases, place him in the current that Filiberto Menna called Pittura Analitica (Analytic Painting). The artwork Pittura R (Painting R) well represents this phase of research. In 1975 he was induced to try a new way of painting. Reducing the size of the work becomes citation of the concept of painting. In 1975, invited by Giorgio Cortenova in Rimini, in the exhibition "Empirica" Pinelli makes the first breakout in monochrome and with the presentation of a small work, where the canvas has replaced the buckskin, moving away from the idea of painting and painted surface, identifying a new field of investigation. From this point nodal starts the season of the "Dissemination" where the painting, reduced to fragments, almost mimicking the gesture of the sower, is located on the wall in a synthesis between space and painting that form a "unique". The fragments always monochromes will suffer in the time variations, from modular forms rigorous (1976) to others that appear to swell for a sort of expansion energy (1984) to the "slivers", characterized by the lightness as were the skin of the painting (1986) to the subsequent series where the painting have regained a greater corporeal substance. Among the major exhibition are in 1986 the Venice Biennale dedicated to the Color; in 2003 the exhibition 3 x monochrome at the Museo Neubau der Kreissparkasse, Rottweil; recently, in 2014, the exhibition Nati nei 30. Milano e la generazione di Piero Manzoni (Born in 30s. Milan and the generation of Piero Manzoni) at Museo della Permanente, Milano and the solo exhibition Pino Pinelli.
